An alternative for the treatment of iron chlorosis in olive and herbaceous plants has been found

The College of Agricultural Engineers of Andalusia rewards a research work carried out in ceiA3

The siderite, a mineral from the carbonates group could have the solution to one of the most common problems in Mediterranean Agriculture: iron chlorosis - a problem caused by the lack of iron in the nutrition of crops. This vegetal “anemia” provokes that the leaves of olive trees, vines and other fruit grown in calcareous soils turn yellowish and It is treated with various fertilizer products that try to overcome the lack of iron.

A research work carried out in the International Campus of Excellence in Agrifood, ceiA3, developed by Inmaculada Sánchez-Alcalá under the direction of Maria del Carmen del Campillo and José Torrent, Department of Agronomy of the School of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering, University of Córdoba, proposes an alternative to the usual products based on siderite. This proposal has proven its efficacy and persistence to prevent iron deficiency in olive trees. In this sense, the research work carried out by Sanchez-Alcalá has proved that this treatment is economically and environmentally attractive for treat iron chlorosis due to its crystalline characteristics, ease preparation and the results obtained in the soil.

This research work has earned the XIII Award of doctoral thesis of the Official College of Agronomy Engineering of Andalusia due to its contribution to the Andalusia agriculture.
