A course will be offered on the latest techniques for measuring the fertility of cultivated plants

A course will be offered on the latest techniques for measuring the fertility of cultivated plants Francisco Antunes

The Training Courses Programme of CEIA3 will offer a new course on “Methods and Techniques for measuring the fertility of flowers” at the end of September. The classes will be held from the 23rd to the 27th of September, 2013 in Almeria University Campus and in other Scientific Centers nearby.
Professor in the area of Vegetable Production of the University of Almería, with ample experience in the study of the reproductive biology of cultivated plants, Julián Cuevas will be in charge of the course.

The main objective of the course is to train researchers and technicians in fundaments and methodology for the evaluation of the success or failure of reproduction in cultivated plants, and specifically fertility of the androecium (pollen) and the gynoecium (pistil). It is hoped that the students will also receive training in measuring floral attraction and the benefits plants offer their pollinators. So, practice in measuring pollinator insect vectors and pollen-pistil interaction will be included.

Measurement of fertilization levels, initial and final setting of fruit and seed abortion will also be studied, as well as the effects on the quality of the fruit.
It is believed that the course will be of special interest to researchers in training and to students of Agronomy, but also for those in interested in studies in Vegetal Botany and Ecology.

Thus, students of Agronomy, Agricultural, Mountain Engineering, Biological Sciences, Environmental Science and related fields can register for the course. Students should register by the 15th of September. Due to the large practical element of the course and the use of microscopic techniques, only 12 students can be selected. Preference will be given to students according to their university qualification, progress in Doctoral Thesis in the field and chronological order of registration. Selected students will be informed on the 16th of September.
