ceiA3 researcher Francisco Egea presents H2020 project BLOOM in the AmBioBlitz Open Days at the University of Almeria

From April 25 to 26, AmBioBlitz Open Days for the study of environmental diversity were held at the Campus of the University of Almeria and organized by CECO-UAL and the University of Almeria, which is part of the Agrifood Campus of International Excellence ceiA3.

ceiA3 researcher Francisco Egea participated in the open days held at the University of Almeria, where he exposed how bioeconomy can positively influence on our lives. This activity was part of the H2020 project BLOOM (Boosting European Citizens' Knowledge and Awareness of Bioeconomy Research and Innovation), which brings together partners from across Europe to debate on the potential of bioeconomy and to engage the civil society.

By uniting science and society, AmBioBlitz aims at promoting the interaction between researchers, project officers, environmental professionals, academia, educational centres and civil society, as well as increasing the knowledge of the citizens and the university community about biodiversity and ensuring that society acquires a deeper understanding of scientific work. In addition, an exhaustive inventory on the biodiversity present in the UAL Campus and an environmental diagnosis were carried out. Another objective was to promote long-term projects for the protection, conservation and increase of biodiversity and its habitats within the university campus.

Bioeconomy is broadly defined as the set of economic activities focused on innovation, technology and knowledge, which generate high added value products and services by using resources of biological origin as raw materials. In this way, it proposes a new productive model based on the optimization of energy sources and resources, prioritizing the use of renewable ones. In short, it aims at ensuring food security, biodiversity and environmental protection through the responsible use of the biological material of the planet.

As one of its main strategic lines, ceiA3 commits to sustainable development and bioeconomy by aligning with the main policies on bioeconomy, strengthening knowledge transfer and dissemination to society, consolidating the scientific excellence and promoting the industrial leadership of the companies of the sector.
